On the synodal road to 2025
In February 2023, following a Laudato Si’ Movement Board retreat, the first General Assembly and Global Encounter in Assisi, to be held on the occasion of Pentecost in 2025, was announced.
On the road towards this event, our movement is on a synodal journey, a process of preparation towards the celebratory jubilee. The itinerary in these two years will include recognizing ourselves as a movement and deepening our journey together.

What is happening?
Laudato Si’ Movement was born in 2015 at a moment of profound transformation, a new fountain springing up, as the cry of the Earth and the cry of the poor found expression in Laudato Si’. Now, as we approach 10 years together, we are called to continue following where the river of the Holy Spirit leads.
Through many conversations, much prayer, and a years-long process of discernment, we see the Holy Spirit leading us to become a more member-led movement. This transition will allow our secretariat to more fully follow the needs and gifts of our members.
Over the next two years, leading up to a jubilee year of 2025, we will take the first steps to act on this call.
The contours of this new phase of our movement will be shaped together, with many details and decisions to be made along the way. For now, we invite all to celebrate this joyful transformation, emerging into a beautiful, strong new form.
What are the stages along the river?
Over the next two years, we will unite in a series of conversations to reflect on our history and explore directions for our future. Some of these conversations will be more informal “encounters,” while others will be more formal “assemblies.”
The journey consists of five successive stages:
- Our Waters: a survey to better understand our members and identify potential participants for encounters and assemblies
- The Streams: local encounters
- The Rivers: national encounters
- The Major Rivers: continental encounters and regional assemblies
- The Great River: global encounter and general assembly
In addition to the 2025 encounters and assemblies, 2025 is also a jubilee year to celebrate both the 800th anniversary of the Canticle of the Creatures and the 10th anniversary of the Laudato Si’ encyclical and our movement.
Why is a general assembly needed?
In many lay movements, religious orders, and other Catholic organizations, a general assembly establishes a vision and makes big-picture decisions. This is an important and healthy way to ensure that the organization is representative of its members. Laudato Si’ Movement will develop its own general assembly over the coming two years.
The general assembly will make decisions for the movement as a whole, potentially to include decisions about strategy and leadership. Exact responsibilities will be shaped over the months ahead.
Why is a survey needed?
As the Holy Spirit flows within and between us, we too are joining in a flowing river of communion.
A first stage is to simply know better the waters that make us up.
Who are we? Where have we been? What is our experience? Knowing this information will help us better prepare for the conversations that lie ahead.
Why complete the survey?
In addition to improving an understanding of our movement, completing the survey is also a way of stepping forward, standing up, saying “Yes, I’m a member of Laudato Si’ Movement!”
This is important as it will help us understand who would like to be included in the encounters and assemblies. Your response is needed by 31 August in order to be considered as a potential participant in the assemblies and encounters. These are precious conversations about the direction of our movement, and we would be grateful to include you there.
The survey has a few basic questions and will take you no more than 5 minutes. It should be completed by 31 August.
