Mon institution va-t-elle perdre de l’argent en désinvestissant des fossiles ?
Les institutions catholiques qui ont le privilège de gérer des actifs financiers comptent souvent sur des rendements réguliers de ceux-ci. La bonne nouvelle, c’est que désinvestir des fossiles est une décision financière saine et prudente. Les gestionnaires d’actifs reconnaissent de plus en plus le risque croissant qu’apporte des investissements dans les industries fossiles. Le rejet croissant (et nécessaire) des énergies fossiles par les pays du monde entier signifie que les actifs liés aux énergies fossiles vont devenir des “actifs échoués”, des investissements qui vont perdre toute valeur. D’autre part, les projets d’énergie renouvelable sont rentables et très nécessaires.

Pourquoi désinvestir des énergies fossiles?
Un monde alimenté par des énergies propres et renouvelables est à portée de main. Il se construit chaque jour grâce aux investissements dans les énergies renouvelables. Cette transformation enthousiasmante s’accélère dans le monde entier.
Cependant, tant que nous continuons à investir ou à faire du profit dans les énergies climaticides, ce changement n’aura pas lieu. Et les pauvres souffrent en premier des impacts du changement climatique, tandis que notre Maison commune se dégrade, que ce soit par des inondations monstres au Pakistan, des ouragans sans précédent à Porto Rico ou des vagues de chaleurs, feux de forêts et autres catastrophes.
C’est pourquoi les catholiques, avec toutes les personnes de bonne volonté à travers le monde, re-investissent leurs finances loin des fossiles pour mener cette nécessaire transformation.
Concrètement, qu’est-ce qu’implique le désinvestissement?
Une fois qu’une institution sait quelle industrie elle ne souhaite pas ou plus soutenir, désinvestir peut être aussi simple qu’établir une liste d’exclusion, c’est à dire une liste d’entreprises ou de types d’entreprises auxquelles elle ne souhaite pas avoir affaire, et faire en sorte que le ou les gestionnaires d’actifs suivent ces principes.
La politique peut être plus large, et exclure toute entreprise ou type d’actif exposé au-delà d’un certain seuil à l’industrie fossile, comme des institutions financières, des assurances ou des entreprises au service de l’exploration et installation d’infrastructures d’extraction des fossiles.

Leur banque est connue pour financer de nouvelles centrales au charbon. Ils changent de banque pour une banque éthique et s’engagent à ne détenir aucun actif lié à l’industrie des énergies fossiles à l’avenir.
Le diocèse de Z dispose d’un riche patrimoine, géré par différents prestataires et en interne. Désireux de s’aligner sur la doctrine sociale, ils s’engagent à désinvestir de l’industrie la plus polluante. Ils négocient avec leurs gestionnaires d’actifs, fixent un calendrier clair. Au bout de 3 ans, ils finissent par rompre leur partenariat avec un de leurs gestionnaires d’actifs, réticent à mettre en place la nouvelle politique.
