Laudato Si’ Reflection Day, held during the first week of June, brought together a powerful coalition of European voices—from EU policymakers to faith-based organisations and civil society groups—all united by a shared commitment to respond to the dual cries of our time: the cry of the Earth and the cry of the poor.
Hosted by the European Laudato Si’ Alliance, the event served as a much needed space for deep reflection on how EU policy can—and must—pave the way for a just transition and sustainable food systems that truly serve both people and the planet.
Among the key contributors was Lorna Gold, representing Laudato Si’ Movement, whose presence reaffirmed the moral and spiritual urgency of climate justice.
The event affirmed that our ecological response must be built on justice, dignity, and care for the most vulnerable.
Policy and Moral Courage: Voices from the EU
🗨️ Manuela Ripa, Member of the European Parliament, reminded that the pace of change demands unity and determination:
“Our world is changing rapidly & we need everyone on board; without collective effort, meaningful change simply won’t happen.”
🗨️ Philippe Lamberts, Advisor to the European Commission Presidency, highlighted that justice cannot be an afterthought:
“Collective bargaining, fair taxation, and strong social security systems are key. We need active engagement by Member States, as this is essential to make the just transition a reality.”
These voices, along with others present, made clear that the ecological transition must not come at the cost of social equity—it must be shaped by it.
A Call for Integral Ecology
Rooted in Pope Francis’ encyclical Laudato Si’, the day’s discussions pointed to integral ecology as the guiding framework for policymaking. This approach insists that environmental and social crises are deeply interconnected—and must be addressed together.
🌍 Whether tackling food insecurity or advancing clean energy, the question remains: Are we protecting both our common home and the dignity of those who inhabit it?
