In a groundbreaking show of unity, the Catholic bishops of Africa, Asia, and Latin America and the Caribbean have issued their first-ever joint statement—just in time to influence key decisions ahead of COP30, the UN climate summit taking place in Brazil this year.
What’s the Statement About?
The bishops are not mincing words. Their appeal calls for:
- Transparent, ambitious plans from each country to achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement
- No new fossil fuel infrastructure and taxing those who have already profited
- Direct climate finance for vulnerable countries–no loans, and no intermediaries such as the IMF or World Bank
- Women-centered solutions and decentralised renewable energy policies
- Avoiding false solutions like carbon credits, which privatize nature
- Value life before profit
Their message is urgent and clear: “The cry of the Earth is also the cry of the poor.”
