Around the world, a powerful cry is rising — not from the halls of parliaments or corporate boardrooms, but from the voices of those who pray, protest, and persevere on the frontlines of climate injustice. These voices demand an end to the fossil fuel era, and they grow louder every day.
A Message from Bishop Gerry Alminaza, Head of the Laudato Si’ Programme, Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines
As the devastating impacts of the climate crisis become impossible to ignore, I write to my brothers and sisters in faith across the United Kingdom with a heartfelt plea. This May, as many European banks hold their annual general meetings, I am traveling to Europe to urge these financial institutions to stop funding the ecological destruction that threatens our common home.
Catholics in the UK are known for their deep commitment to environmental stewardship. I witness the inspiring work of lay Catholics campaigning for climate justice, holding prayer services for creation, and educating young people in Catholic social teaching. You stand alongside devoted clergy such as Bishop John Arnold (England and Wales), Archbishop William Nolan (Scotland), Bishop Martin Hayes (Ireland), and many others committed to protecting God’s creation.
Jean-Michel Mithieux, Diocesan Treasurer, Diocese of Grenoble
The Diocese of Grenoble-Vienne, which joined the global divestment announcement in November 2024, shares:
“For several years, the Diocese has ensured its economic choices align with the Social Doctrine of the Church. The Laudato Si’ encyclical and Laudate Deum have reminded us to act in faith. We have divested from fossil fuels in all direct holdings and continue to seek divestment from structured products partially invested in fossil fuels.”
Helen Elwes, Laudato Si’ Animator, Blackfriars Laudato Si’ Circle, Oxford
Helen joined the Big Bank Switch in 2024 and says:
“I realised how every action affects God’s creation. After learning Santander was one of the UK’s top fossil fuel funders, I switched to Nationwide, an ethical bank. The process was smooth, and now I bank with a clear conscience, supporting a better future.”
A Growing Global Movement for Climate Justice
This movement is not waiting for governments to lead — it is showing the way forward. Faith leaders call on the world to repent for its addiction to fossil fuels and protect the dignity of all life. Youth activists refuse to accept a broken system and are building one rooted in justice. Frontline communities are visionaries, shaping a future grounded in ecological balance and human rights.
The call to end the fossil fuel era is more than a political statement. It is the cry of the Earth and the cry of the poor. It is time we listen.
