Laudato Si’ Movement was present at a meeting with the official delegation of the Brazilian Government at COP 29, highlighting the importance of the participation of civil society in climate negotiations and the need for Brazil’s ambitious and inclusive leadership on the global stage.
During the meeting, Brazil’s vice-president, Geraldo Alckmin; the Minister of the Environment and Climate Change, Marina Silva; and the Minister of Indigenous Peoples, Sonia Guajajara, together with ambassador André Aranha Corrêa and other political and grassroots leaders, presented Brazil’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). These goals highlight the country’s commitment to mitigating climate change and protecting natural resources.
In her speech, Marina Silva emphasized the decision to publish Brazil’s NDCs in advance, stressing that the country is committed to adopting an ambitious and responsible stance in fighting the climate crisis. She also highlighted the importance of Brazil setting an example for other nations, being an active player in defending fair and effective solutions for the environment.
One of the topics discussed was the impact of climate change on vulnerable communities, which highlighted the issue of environmental racism. Participants emphasized how these changes affect specific groups unequally, making it essential to engage the whole of society in the search for inclusive and fair solutions.
Laudato Si’ Movement pointed out that people’s participation is crucial to the success of negotiations and stressed that COP 30, which will take place in Brazil, must be a “COP of the people and of the peoples”. This vision reflects the desire for the Conference to be a space where the voices of organized civil society groups and the communities most affected by climate change can be heard and supported in their decisions.
The activity is part of Laudato Si’ Movement’s participation agenda at COP 29, which will continue following other events from different sectors of society through next week.
