The recent Laudato Si’ Movement (LSM) Asia Pacific bi-monthly regional gathering was a powerful event with the theme, “Rising Tides, Raising Voices: A Call to Stewardship in the Climate Emergency.” Led by Pacific animators and coordinated by Sr. Lusi Matai of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Cluny,  the gathering brought together members from Asia, Oceania, and beyond, united in their commitment to tackling the climate crisis.

Kositatino “Kosi”  Tikomaibolatagane representing Oceania in the LSM Global Membership Committee warmly welcomed participants. He emphasized the urgency of raising collective voices against climate change and other negative impacts of modern development. Kosi highlighted the interconnectedness of all living beings and the need for a stronger, unified voice to advocate for our planet. He expressed gratitude for everyone’s dedication and looked forward to a fruitful discussion guided by the Holy Spirit.

Teresia Powell, Laudato Si’ Animator,  greeted everyone in various Pacific languages and shared about the region’s strong dedication to environmental stewardship and climate justice. Teresia stressed the interconnectedness of the Pacific Ocean and humanity, quoting Pope Francis on the need for global cooperation to address the climate crisis.  She shared a video that detailed the climate emergency in the Pacific and its impact on oceans and coastal communities highlighting rising sea levels, pollution, and loss of biodiversity. Teresia called for urgent global action to reduce emissions, support vulnerable communities, and promote sustainable development through traditional knowledge and science. She encouraged solidarity and cooperation among churches and nations to combat the climate crisis.

The group discussions provided valuable insights and reflections, including:

  • The importance of taking collective action to address climate change, emphasizing the need for a unified, strong voice to represent affected communities and lift up the voices of the vulnerable.
  • The shared experiences of Pacific Island Nations and the Philippines, emphasizing the need for integral ecology, strong environmental laws, and using social media to amplify voices.
  • The devastating impact of climate change on small Pacific islands, stressing the importance of understanding and responding to the climate crisis and promoting love for our common home.
  • Need to raise awareness in first-world countries using impactful tools like videos to change.

A video testimonial from Archbishop Peter Loy Chong of Suva, Fiji, highlighted the Tuvaluan Coastal Adaptation Project, which reclaims land to combat sea level rise but offers only a temporary solution and doesn’t address the root causes of climate change. Archbishop Chong stressed the need for the world to genuinely listen to and empower the voices of Pacific Islanders, urging that their narratives drive meaningful action beyond political and funding

The session highlighted the vital importance of raising strong, unified voices to protect our planet and ensure a sustainable future for all. The heartfelt stories from the Pacific were deeply appreciated, as reflected in the participants’ comments:

  • “An eye-opener for us! Thank you.”
  • “Vinaka vakalevu for such a powerful presentation. Toso tiko vakaukaua! Loloma kei na masu.”
  • “Thank you for telling the world about the situation of rising waters in the Pacific Ocean. We are all called to change our attitudes in our countries (Australia). Thank you for the spiritual lessons you are giving us all.”
