Climate Strike in Kenya

In Nairobi, Kenya, a dynamic coalition of young leaders, including Laudato Si’ Animators, recently united for a march, calling for urgent global action on two critical issues: the endorsement of a Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty and the pursuit of an ambitious Plastics Treaty by the Kenyan government.

The Global Climate Strike Day is a pivotal moment for climate action, mobilizing people worldwide to confront the systemic issues driving climate change. This growing movement has seen active participation from Laudato Si’ Animators, who raise important questions about the allocation of resources: are they funding destruction or supporting the planet and vulnerable communities?

Kenya faces severe climate change impacts, such as widespread flooding displacing hundreds of thousands of families across the continent, making decisive action more urgent than ever. Chrispine Mundia, a justice and peace practitioner, states his commitment to supporting a treaty banning fossil fuels to protect our planet for future generations. These passionate advocates are urging world leaders not only to phase out fossil fuels but also to prioritize negotiating and implementing a comprehensive treaty to combat the plastic pollution crisis.

Advocating for a Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty offers an opportunity to garner more support for adopting renewable energy and phasing out fossil fuels, which is crucial for Kenya’s future prosperity and a just transition. “Fossil fuel treaties are not just about regulations; they are a moral obligation to protect our planet and ensure a sustainable future for all living beings,” echoed Elizabeth Ireri, a Laudato Si’ Animator and member of the Climate Youth Ecumenical Summit.

Furthermore, these young leaders emphasize the importance of engaging youth voices in the movement for fossil fuel non-proliferation, recognizing their unique perspectives and vital role in driving meaningful change.

Through their collective efforts, Nairobi’s young leaders and Laudato Si’ Animators are sending a clear message: the time for action is now, and the future of our planet depends on it.
