Enthusiastic youth come together to plant trees at the LSM Indonesia Lampung chapter’s organized event

On February 18, 2024, the local chapter of the Laudato Si Movement Indonesia led a tree planting activity along the path to Mount Betung Waterfalls.

This initiative, ahead of International World Forest Day, brought together students, young adults, a farmers’ group, and community members to collectively care for the forest.

Participants included students from SMA Xaverius Bandarlampung’s Nature Lovers Club (Sicita), as well as students from Lampung State University (UNILA), Sumatera Institute of Technology (ITERA), and Gentiaras Higher School of Economics. Gionya Tari S. Zahra, one of the students, expressed his joy in contributing to the cause and feeling a sense of unity during the activity. He shared a message with his peers:  “Planting trees is a small but valuable step to maintain the balance of the ecosystem and pass on a healthy environment to future generations. Education and awareness of environmental issues can also form a generation that cares about preserving nature”.

Kusno, representing UPTD KPHK Tahura Wan Abdul Rachman and the Karya Makmur Farmers Group, helped identify the trees to be planted as well as the planting locations. The planting sites were carefully chosen to maximize ecological benefits, focusing on species known for water retention and which can be a source of income for the community.  By the day’s end, 150 plant seeds, including candlenut, petai, avocado, and eucalyptus trees, had been planted.

Sr. Vicenta HK, who leads the LSM Indonesia-Bandung chapter,  lends a helping hand alongside students during the tree planting session

Sr. Vincentia HK, from the Religious of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and leader of LSM Indonesia-Lampung chapter, commended the participants for their enthusiasm and dedication. Drawing inspiration from Pope Francis’ call to protect the Earth, she emphasized the transformative impact of collective efforts in protecting our common home.
